Andre Onana 'rested' for Newcastle match, but will Man United number one return against Lyon?

Onana 'rested' for Newcastle match: Will Man United goalkeeper return vs. Lyon?

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana will reportedly not be involved in Sunday's Premier League clash with Newcastle United.

There has been intense criticism of the Cameroonian following his performance in Thursday's Europa League quarter-final first leg against Lyon, with the 29-year-old making two mistakes in his side's 2-2 draw.

Onana let a Thiago Almada free kick to sail into the back of the net to give Lyon an advantage in the first half, before he fumbled a strike from Georges Mikautadze late on into a dangerous area, with Rayan Cherki on hand to convert.

The goalkeeper was involved in a war of words with Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matic ahead of the clash, with the latter branding him "one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history".

Several of Man United's players have allegedly turned on Onana following his display against Lyon, with many allegedly believing that it is the right time for number two Altay Bayindir to be given an opportunity to make his mark.

Onana 'not in the Man United squad' for Newcastle match

According to the Manchester Evening News, Onana will not be involved in Man United's Premier League clash with Newcastle on Sunday.

The report claims that Bayindir is therefore in line to make his Premier League debut for the 20-time English champions.

Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim allegedly explained to Onana that he has been rested rather than dropped, with personal issues also said to be troubling the Cameroonian at this moment in time.

The goalkeeper's wife, Melanie Kamayou, was robbed outside a restaurant last month, and it has since been revealed that a 25-year-old man from Bradford has been charged with one count of robbery.

Will Onana be back in goal against Lyon?

In truth, it was a relatively straightforward decision for Amorim to rest Onana against Newcastle, but his major call will come against Lyon next week, as the French side head to Old Trafford for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final.

Should Bayindir put in a strong performance against Newcastle and keep a clean sheet, then the Turkey international would be in an excellent position to feature between the sticks against Lyon.

However, Onana remains Man United's number one goalkeeper at this moment in time, and it would not be surprising to see the former Inter Milan stopper return in goal for the team's biggest match of the season; Amorim has a gigantic call to make.
