Vincent Kompany saddened by England exit

Belgium captain Vincent Kompany admits that he is "saddened" by England's early exit at the World Cup.

Belgium captain Vincent Kompany has admitted that he is "saddened" to see England exit the World Cup so early.

The Three Lions' hopes of reaching the second round were dashed on Friday night thanks to Costa Rica's surprise win over Italy.

Kompany, who plays his club football for Manchester City, wishes that Roy Hodgson's side could have gone further in the tournament.

"The [English] players that I have as friends and that I have a lot of respect for meant I wanted them to have a good competition and I'm very saddened as much as the English fans about the exit of England," he is quoted as saying by ITV Sport.

Kompany and Belgium return to action on Sunday when they face Russia in Rio de Janeiro.
