Newcastle United reportedly receive a setback in their pursuit of Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson.

Newcastle United have reportedly received a setback in their quest to sign Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson.

Since joining from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2020, Robinson has gone on to make 92 appearances for Fulham, contributing three goals and five assists.

After helping Marco Silva's side win promotion from the Championship last season, Robinson has started 22 of the club's 25 Premier League games.

The full-back also picked up his first assist of the season in Friday's 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers, setting up Manor Solomon's 64th-minute equaliser.

Robinson, who played every minute of United States' 2022 World Cup campaign, has recently been linked with a summer move to Newcastle United.

The Magpies have reportedly sent scouts to watch Robinson this season, and following positive reports on his performances, they have made him one of their top summer transfer targets.

However, according to Football Insider, Fulham are in a "very good position" to agree a new contract with Robinson.

The United States international has less than 18 months left on his current deal, but talks are now ongoing about an extension.

While a new deal is yet to be agreed between the two parties, the report suggests that negotiations are progressing well.

Robinson has also attracted interest from Manchester City, AC Milan and Inter Milan, but he could now be set to extend his stay at Craven Cottage.

News of a potential new contract will come as a blow to Newcastle, who are hoping to strengthen the left side of their defence in the summer.

Versatile defender Dan Burn has been preferred by Eddie Howe over Matt Targett as Newcastle's first-choice left-back this season.

Although Burn is set to be offered a new contract, Newcastle are keen to sign a more attack-minded full-back with greater mobility than the 6ft 7in defender.

After losing to Manchester United in Sunday's EFL Cup final, the Magpies will now turn their attention to Saturday's Premier League away meeting with Manchester City.
