Man City confirm Sterling signing

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Raheem Sterling from Liverpool.

The 20-year-old winger has joined the former Premier League champions for around £49m - a record fee for an English player.

Sterling has penned a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium and will wear the number seven shirt.

The England international scored 23 goals in 129 games for Liverpool after joining the club's academy from Queens Park Rangers in 2010.

However, his time at Anfield ended acrimoniously, with the player being accused of forcing a move away from Liverpool by refusing to sign a lucrative new contract.

"Raheem Sterling is one of the best attacking players in world football, and I am very much looking forward to him joining our squad out in Australia later this week," City boss Manuel Pellegrini told the club's official website.

"He is a young player with outstanding ability, and I am sure the Manchester City fans will be very excited about seeing him in action for the team."

Sterling has scored one goal in 16 games for England.
