“An easy choice”: Manuel Akanji joins Inter Milan from Man City with transfer details confirmed

“An easy choice”: Akanji transfer details revealed as Inter confirm signing from Man City

Serie A giants Inter Milan have confirmed the signing of defender Manuel Akanji from Manchester City.

The 30-year-old arrives at San Siro on a season-long loan deal and the Italian club have revealed that they have an option to make the deal permanent, which will become an obligation if certain conditions are met.

Akanji, who was previously linked with the likes of AC Milan, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, completed his move to Inter on the final day of the summer transfer window and becomes Christian Chivu’s seventh new signing.

Commenting on his switch to Inter, Akanji told the club’s official website: "For me, Inter is one of the biggest clubs in Italy, and in the World, as they've proven in the past few years. It was an easy choice to come here.

"I cannot wait to meet the Inter fans at San Siro, in the first home game that we'll have: I am waiting for that moment".

Akanji added: "Inter have shown that they can reach important finals, I hope we will be able to reach a final again, and win it this time. We already met in a final, two years ago, and this time I hope that Inter wins.

"It will be different to the Premier League, and the Bundesliga was different. I have watched many Serie A games, I know the teams in the league. I really like this league, it's another reason why I'm here, I cannot wait to meet the manager, and to learn the way that we play: I cannot wait.

"I can play in any position across a back three, and I have also played in the centre for Switzerland. I can play in different positions, but obviously it is the manager's choice as to where I play”.

Akanji departs Man City three years after moving to the Etihad Stadium from Borussia Dortmund for around £15m, and he proved to be an invaluable defensive asset under manager Pep Guardiola.

The Switzerland international won a total of seven trophies during his time with the Citizens and was a first-team regular in the side that won a historic treble, including the club’s first Champions League triumph, in his debut campaign in 2022-23.

Akanji, a two-time Premier League winner, has made 136 appearances for Man City in all competitions, but he was free to leave the club this summer as Guardiola was keen to trim his bloated squad to fit in younger players and new signings.

The versatile defender is now looking forward to life in a new league and could make his Serie A debut for Inter in their next match away against Juventus after the international break on September 13.
