Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure believes that Benjamin Mendy is a "fantastic" and "exciting" player, but hopes he can adapt quickly to the Premier League.

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has described Benjamin Mendy as a "fantastic" and "exciting" player, but hopes that he adapts quickly to the Premier League.

The France left-back, 23, was signed for £49.2m from Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco on Monday, taking the Citizens' player spending so far this summer beyond the £200m mark.

Toure, meanwhile, is about to begin his eighth season at the Etihad Stadium, having signed a new one-year extension to remain with the club in June.

"I know Mendy, because he's French and he's been playing for my former club Monaco. I think he's a fantastic player," Toure told Sky Sports News. "You will see in the Premier League how powerful he is, how much energy he has. This guy is very exciting to see.

"I hope he's going to be fine in the Premier League, because it is such a tough league, and we all know you need to adapt for a month or so, or some players go on straight away. We will see. I hope he can adapt as much as possible because we don't have time."

Mendy has signed a five-year contract with Pep Guardiola's Man City and could play his first game for the club against Real Madrid in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.
