Former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi, now with Benfica, has reportedly been attacked and robbed in front of his wife and son at his family home in Portugal.

Former Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi was reportedly attacked and robbed at his family home in Portugal.

The 33-year-old endured the horrific incident in the early hours of Monday morning, less than 24 hours after playing for current club Benfica in their 4-1 league victory away against Famalicao.

According to Lisbon-based news outlet Correio da Manha, Otamendi was beaten by four robbers who held a belt around his neck in front of his 'panicking' wife and son, before they stole money and watches from his home.

The report adds that the Portuguese Judiciary Police are now investigating the crime, while Benfica have revealed that the Argentine and his family are in good health.

A statement from Benfica, via Goal, read: "Benfica confirms that their player Nico Otamendi was the victim of a robbery at his home during the early hours of today.

"The athlete and the family are doing well, despite the enormous discomfort caused by the situation they are experiencing.

"Sport Lisboa e Benfica calls for the privacy of the player and his family to be respected by all the media, while awaiting the conduct of investigations initiated by the authorities."

Otamendi made 210 appearances across all competitions for Man City between 2015 and 2020, winning two Premier League titles and seven more domestic trophies.
