Half-Time Report: Newcastle United leading at Manchester City

An early Rolando Aarons goal gives Newcastle United a 1-0 lead away at Manchester City in tonight's League Cup clash at the Etihad.

An early Rolando Aarons goal has given Newcastle United a 1-0 lead away at Manchester City in tonight's League Cup clash at the Etihad.

The Magpies took the lead in the sixth minute when Fernandinho's mistake deep into his own half allowed the 18-year-old to pick up the ball before confidently slotting it past goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

Worse was to come for Manuel Pellegrini's side when David Silva limped off after appearing to injure his left knee moments before the Newcastle goal.

In the 21st minute, however, the hosts had a great chance to pull themselves level when substitute Samir Nasri lashed a cross into the box, where Stevan Jovetic was waiting to seemingly bundle his effort into the bottom corner. However, Newcastle keeper Rob Elliott pulled off a smart save to deny the Montenegrin striker.

More action was to come as Fabricio Coloccini sliced a James Milner ball against his own post just before the half-hour mark, while Paul Dummett forced a reflex leg stop from Caballero at the other end a few minutes later.

Right at the end of the half, Daryl Janmaat was able to deliver a pinpoint low cross towards Adam Armstrong, but the ball skidded just wide of the post.
