Manuel Pellegrini: 'We have not failed in Champions League'

Pellegrini: 'We haven't failed in Europe'

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has claimed that his team should not be accused of failing in the Champions League during his reign.

Pellegrini's side have been beaten by Barcelona in the last 16 in each of the last two campaigns, and questions were raised about their performances in the competition after losing their opening Group D fixture to Juventus a fortnight ago.

However, the Chilean believes that the defeats to Barcelona mean that his squad are better equipped than ever to triumph in Europe.

"Well, I always repeat the same answer to the same question," the City boss told reporters. "I don't think we have failed in Europe.

"In the last two years, we have qualified for the next stage and then we lost against the best team in the world, Barcelona.

"That's why we know how to win in Europe. That's why we qualified for two seasons — we have beaten Bayern Munich twice. Last year, we were in a very complicated situation and we won our last two games against Roma away and Bayern Munich at home. So we know how to do it."

City meet Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday night.
