Manuel Pellegrini upbeat over Champions League last-16 hopes

Pellegrini upbeat over last-16 hopes

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini is optimistic that his side can pip Roma to join Bayern Munich in the last-16 stage of the Champions League.

Pellegrini's side edged out 10-man Bayern 3-2 in a pulsating clash at Eastlands tonight to revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stages, with Sergio Aguero completing his hat-trick with a stoppage-time winner.

The victory saw City move second on goal difference ahead of third-placed Roma and CSKA Moscow in fourth, with the Germans already winning Group E.

The Sky Blues face the Italians in Rome next month knowing that victory would effectively see them move into the second round, and Pellegrini has called on his troops to continue their resurgence.

"There are a lot of different options. We are always feeling positive but it does not always depend on what we can do," he told BBC Sport.

"We must try to have our chance to the end and the way to have that chance is to win at Roma."

The Premier League champions have suffered group-stage exits from the tournament in two of the last three seasons.
