Martin Schmidt leads Mainz 05 past Eintracht Frankfurt in first game

Martin Schmidt begins his Mainz 05 reign with a 3-1 victory over Eintracht Franfkurt at the Coface Arena.

Martin Schmidt claimed victory in his first game in charge of Mainz 05 as his side came from behind to record a comfortable 3-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

It was Franfkurt who started the game confidently, and their early pressure was rewarded with 10 minutes remaining in the first half when Stefan Aigner beat the offside trap with a clever run before picking out the bottom corner from a tight angle.

However, the response was swift from Mainz as Shinji Okazaki sprinted clear to latch onto a long ball and tee up Christian Clemens, who tapped in from close range to ensure that his side were level at the break.

The hosts took the lead two minutes into the second half through Johannes Geis, who curled in a free kick from the left wing to leave Kevin Trapp helpless.

Mainz's confidence continued to grow, and they scored a third just three minutes later when Yunus Malli collected a pass from Pablo De Blasis before firing in an emphatic finish.

Frankfurt were unable to get back into the game, and the afternoon ended in disappointing fashion for Thomas Schaaf's side as Carlos Zambrano picked up a red card late on for a second bookable offence.
