Liverpool transfer news: Two Premier League clubs made 'last-ditch' moves for Joe Gomez on deadline day

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez was reportedly the subject of interest from two Premier League clubs on deadline day.

Gomez has been linked with a move away from Anfield in the last few transfer windows after struggling for regular game time. 

The 28-year-old has had to settle for just two substitute appearances in Liverpool's opening three Premier League games of the season, with Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate regarded as Arne Slot's first-choice central defensive pairing. 

Gomez will ultimately remain at Liverpool until at least the January transfer window after he failed to secure a move away in the summer transfer market.

Brighton, Palace made late attempts to sign Gomez

According to Football Insider, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace both explored 'last-ditch' deals to sign the Liverpool man. 

Brighton were seemingly open to signing the defender despite being able to call upon Jan Paul van Hecke, Olivier Boscagli, Diego Coppola and Lewis Dunk as their central defensive options. 

Rather than a centre-back, Brighton may have viewed Gomez as an option to compete with Joel Veltman for the right-back spot.

Meanwhile, Brighton's rivals, Palace, seemingly identified Gomez as a potential replacement for Marc Guehi, who saw a move to Liverpool fall through on the final day of the window.

The Eagles were ultimately failed to find Guehi's replacement in time, ensuring that he stayed put at Selhurst Park and Gomez remained at Anfield.

What next for Gomez? 

Gomez was reportedly in 'no rush' to leave Liverpool despite having to settle for a squad role. 

However, he could fall further down the pecking order if the Reds make an attempt to sign Guehi in the January transfer window. 

For now, Gomez will focus on being a dependable option for Slot in any position across the backline, and with a busy schedule, he should get opportunities to enjoy time on the pitch when the Liverpool boss opts to rotate his squad.
