Sunderland sign Sebastian Coates on loan

Sunderland have signed Sebastian Coates on loan from Liverpool.

The 23-year-old joined Liverpool from Nacional in 2011, but has failed to settle at Anfield and returned to his former club on loan earlier this year.

A transfer to Spain had been mooted in the past few weeks, but Sunderland have moved to sign the centre-back on a season-long loan.

It is currently unclear whether the agreement involves a future option to buy.

Coates has 15 Uruguayan caps to his name.
