Former player Graeme Souness feels that Liverpool should push ahead with plans to sign RB Leipzig Timo Werner.

Former player Graeme Souness has backed Liverpool to push through a deal for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner.

Despite being frequently linked with the Germany international, the coronavirus pandemic could lead to Liverpool reconsidering their plans for the next transfer window.

However, Souness feels that the Merseyside giants should pay what is required for Werner, who has 27 goals to his name this season.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Souness said: "I would think they go after Werner. When we were the dominant team we spent money and brought players in.

"Liverpool bought players like [Andrew] Robertson and Fabinho who didn't go straight into the team. Players who don't have to be superstars from the very first moment. Manchester United had that for the best part of 20 years, where you don't want to be is when you're playing catch up - buying players under pressure.

"For Liverpool to invest now, as a player it gives you motivation. More competition is always healthy. Even when Liverpool were super successful, Bob Paisley was looking to improve."

Chelsea have also been credited as admirers of Werner.
