Liverpool transfer news: Reds to keep first-team player 'no matter what' on deadline day

'No matter what' - Liverpool 'block' exit of first-team regular following AC Milan bid

Liverpool are reportedly set to keep Joe Gomez at the club past the conclusion of the summer transfer window.

The 28-year-old has played a bit-part role for the title-winning Reds at the beginning of the 2025-26 Premier League campaign.

Gomez has made two top-flight appearances, coming off the bench as a substitute against both Bournemouth and Arsenal at Anfield in August.

The former England international is currently playing third fiddle in the centre-back department to Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate.

Gomez will be hoping for his first start of the Premier League term on September 14 when Arne Slot's side travel to Burnley.

Liverpool 'block' exit of Gomez despite Milan, Brighton interest

According to Sky Sports News, Liverpool have decided the transfer fate of defender Gomez on the final day of the summer window.

The report states that the Reds are not willing to let the 28-year-old depart Anfield on either a permanent or temporary move on deadline day.

It is understood that AC Milan submitted an offer to sign Gomez, who could have fancied the idea of a fresh challenge in Italy.

However, a proposed move supposedly collapsed after the Rossoneri and the Reds accepted that there was no time to agree a deal and complete a medical.

Brighton & Hove Albion were said to be keen on a deal for Gomez, who Liverpool refused to allow transfer elsewhere on a loan basis.

Gomez centre-back challenge

Despite the struggles of the Frenchman at the start of this season, Konate remains the clear choice to partner Van Dijk in defence for Liverpool.

As a result, Gomez is having to settle for a spot on the bench, featuring in just 29 minutes of Premier League action to date.

The 28-year-old's ranking in the pecking order could worsen after deadline day with Liverpool chasing a £35m move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
