Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo has confirmed that Bayern Munich were interested in signing him during the summer transfer window.
The Dutch winger scored 18 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions last season for the Reds, and it did not come as a big surprise that he came under the watchful eye of a top European club in Bayern Munich.
Since moving from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, Gakpo has become a key player for the Reds, but there were fears that Bayern could lure him away from Anfield as they looked to bolster their attacking areas.
After missing out on several top targets, the Bavarian giants eventually signed Gakpo's club teammate, Luis Diaz, for a fee of £65.5m, and with that, the Gakpo transfer saga came to an end.
Gakpo confirms Bayern interest
The 26-year-old has penned a new contract at Anfield that will keep him on Merseyside beyond 2028.
The former PSV attacker revealed that it took him almost a year to sort out his future, but the new contract is proof of his long-term commitment to Liverpool.
"If the future is uncertain, then it will just be a very difficult story," Gakpo said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
"I think it took us a year. Maybe a little longer or shorter, but it's just a long process. From what I understand, they (Bayern) have come, but in the end they have bought Luis Diaz.
"It's nice. Of course, I have experienced it differently myself. Such a transfer window can be hectic and stressful for a player and everyone around him. That doesn't bother me anymore."
Gakpo expected to play a big role under Slot this season
Liverpool have spent big to bolster their attacking options, signing top-class players like Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz.
Gakpo may struggle to get into the first team when the trio is fit, and especially when Mohamed Salah is around, but he can still play a huge role.
The Reds are expected to compete in all the competitions they participate in, and Arne Slot will need to rotate his squad wisely.
The Dutch forward is versatile enough to play across all forward positions, and Slot can utilise him in multiple roles depending on the situation.
