Barcelona rule themselves out of the running to sign Bayern Munich's David Alaba due to the defender's mammoth wage demands, according to a report.

Barcelona will reportedly make no attempt to sign Bayern Munich defender David Alaba due to the Austria international's wage demands.

Alaba is in the final year of his contract with the Champions League holders, who are believed to have withdrawn their offer of an extension for the 28-year-old, meaning that he would be free to leave for nothing next summer.

The Bayern man has played a key role for the Bavarian giants for several years now, but Alaba's future appears to be pointing away from the Allianz Arena, with Liverpool, Juventus and Real Madrid all credited with an interest.

However, Marca claim that while fellow European powerhouses Barcelona have taken a liking to Alaba, the Catalan giants are not in the running to sign the versatile Austrian.

The report claims that Barca - still reeling from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic - are in no position to cater to Alaba's salary demands of €8m (£7.2m) a year while they are still trying to negotiate a pay cut with their existing players.

Alaba has been a part of nine Bundesliga-winning teams during his time at Bayern, where he boasts 31 goals from 394 appearances in all competitions.
