Steven Gerrard penalty rescues point for Liverpool

Gerrard rescues point for Reds

Liverpool have come from two goals down at home to Aston Villa to salvage a point in an entertaining 2-2 draw at Anfield in the Premier League.

A strong first half from Villa saw them take a two-goal lead, but a late strike in the half from Daniel Sturridge and a second-half penalty earned Liverpool a share of the spoils.

Gabriel Agbonlahor could have scored for Villa in the opening few minutes when he struck a right-footed shot towards goal having been played in by Christian Benteke, but his effort was saved.

Villa started to take control of the game and opened the scoring on 25 minutes when Agbonlahor found space before drilling across to Andreas Weimann, who tapped in.

It got even better for them 10 minutes later and it was Agbonlahor with another assist. His cross evaded everyone, eventually falling to Benteke at the far post to head home.

Then Liverpool got a vital goal right before the break through Daniel Sturridge, who met Jordan Henderson's cut-back to halve the deficit in stoppage time.

After the break it was the Liverpool show and they pulled level less than 10 minutes into it. Brad Guzan was adjudged to have brought down Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard stepped up to convert from the spot.

Guzan was then called into action twice in the space of two minutes to keep out first Suarez and then Jordan Henderson as the Reds pushed for a winner.

It was left to Suarez to try his luck from distance, but a stunning effort from a long-range free kick fizzed agonisingly past the post with Guzan beaten.
