Phil Thompson: 'Liverpool in Premier League title contention'

Phil Thompson believes that Liverpool have put themselves in a strong position to challenge for the Premier League title in the second half of the season.

Phil Thompson has claimed that Liverpool are among the contenders to win the Premier League title.

The Reds endured a slow start to the campaign under Brendan Rodgers, but since Jurgen Klopp has replaced the Northern Irishman the club have clicked into gear, losing just one of the German's 11 games in charge.

Thompson believes that Liverpool have propelled themselves into the mix to earn a top-four place, and feels with more work the club could challenge for the Premier League crown.

"I think a lot of teams can challenge for this title. All the managers identify that," Thompson told Sky Sports News.

"It's hard to say Liverpool are out-and-out genuine contenders, though. You have to be careful with this side.

"The home form does have to be a little bit better but they are a genuine top-four challenger, they've already played seven of their most difficult away games. They are in a very good position."

Liverpool face Newcastle United in their next Premier League clash on Sunday.
