Martin Skrtel named player of the year at North West Sports Awards

Skrtel beats Kompany, Valencia to accolade

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has been named Premier League player of the year at tonight's North West Sports Awards.

The 27-year-old was recognised ahead of Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany and Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia.

Skrtel recently reaffirmed his commitment to the Reds by inking a new long-term contract.

He joined the club from Zenit St Petersburg in 2008.
