Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool "clearly the better team" in Merseyside Derby

Brendan Rodgers believes that Liverpool lacked the "bit of luck" needed to make the breakthrough against Everton in the Merseyside derby stalemate at Goodison Park.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has hailed his side's "exciting" performance in yesterday's goalless draw against Everton.

The Reds restricted their local rivals to just a single shot on goal, which came late on when Seamus Coleman tested Simon Mignolet with a stinging shot.

A Jordon Ibe-inspired Liverpool came closet to breaking the deadlock, but Everton remained solid to ensure that Merseyside Derby number 224 ended in a stalemate.

"Over the course of the game we were clearly the better team," Rodgers is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo. "The balance in our game was very good. We switched off towards the end and in the last five minutes when they had a counter-attack that led to their one shot on target.

"Apart that one moment, we defended very, very well, we pressed the game well in the right moments and look exciting in terms of our threat going forward.

"We maybe needed a wee bit of luck in the final third of the field. We had opportunities in both the first half and the second half, we couldn't quite take them. But it was another clean sheet, another point and we keep moving forward."

Liverpool have now tasted defeat on just two occasions in their last 20 outings and sit four points off a Champions League berth.
