Danny Murphy is convinced that Xherdan Shaqiri, who has struggled for game time since his arrival at Liverpool, will have more of an impact at Anfield this season.

Former Liverpool player Danny Murphy has backed Xherdan Shaqiri to improve his fortunes at Anfield this season.

The Switzerland international is currently sidelined through injury, but Shaqiri has struggled to force his way into Liverpool's star-studded attack since his arrival in 2018.

Diogo Jota's excellent form has also made it more difficult for Shaqiri to get a look-in at Liverpool, but Murphy is convinced that the former Stoke City man is ready to take his chance when it comes.

"I think Jota coming in has helped massively," Murphy said in quotes attributed to The Mirror. "And I've spoken to a couple of people who have all said Shaqiri looks really sharp.

"He got a little knock on international duty but I'm expecting him to have more of an impact this season."

Shaqiri has banked one goal and one assist in five appearances across all competitions this season, although a recent report suggested that the Reds are prepared to offload the 29-year-old in January.
