Ray Houghton: 'Improved home form would make Liverpool title contenders'

Former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton says that the club can compete to win the Premier League title if they improve their home form.

Former Liverpool midfielder Ray Houghton has insisted that the club can be serious contenders for the Premier League title under Jurgen Klopp if they improve their home form.

The Reds have enjoyed a resurgence since Klopp took over from Brendan Rodgers on October 8, losing just one of 11 games in all competitions under the German and progressing to the last four of the League Cup with a 6-1 hammering of Southampton on Wednesday.

That run has included convincing Premier League away victories over Chelsea and Manchester City, but they have won just three of their seven home league matches since the start of the season.

If that home form can be improved, Houghton says that he is sure his former side can compete strongly for a first league title since 1990.

"Liverpool's away form this season has been quite brilliant," he told talkSPORT. "The points return against the top teams so far has been phenomenal. But it is at home where they have struggled.

"We have won just three of the seven league games at Anfield and they have not scored too many goals. But if they can get a bit of form from [the Southampton win] into their home games, they will be up there.

"Liverpool are playing with confidence at the moment, we have got a bit of momentum and the manager is bright. Liverpool are six points off the top now and they have played all the top teams away from home, so if they can get their home form sorted out then there is no doubt that they can be up there competing to try and win it."

Before they get the chance to improve their points tally at home, Liverpool face a trip to struggling Newcastle United on Sunday.
