Fans call for boycott of Liverpool, Spurs pre-season friendlies in Malaysia

A Malaysian supporters' group urges fans to boycott pre-season friendlies involving Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur due to the disruption to local football.

A Malaysian supporters' group has called on their fellow fans to boycott pre-season friendlies in their country involving Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs are due to face a Malaysian XI on May 27, while Liverpool will take on a local side almost two months later on July 24.

Fan group 'Ultras Malaya' have expressed their anger that the fixtures disrupt the domestic league and they believe that Malaysia's World Cup qualifying campaign will be hampered.

The supporters have also accused the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) of purely arranging these matches with Premier League opposition for profit.

"Don't buy the tickets, don't go to the stadium," The Guardian quotes a statement as saying. "The matches are simply held to make FAM, the organisers and their cronies rich, so don't let FAM and the organisers profit from this sort of nonsense.

"What's the point? A win for Malaysia is unlikely and you can't be expecting the visitors to give their very best, like they play in the EPL on the TV, can you?"

The arrival of Tottenham comes less than a fortnight before Malaysia's Southeast Asian Games campaign in June.
