Stewart Downing believes that Liverpool need to be more ruthless if they are to challenge for the Premier League title.

Stewart Downing has said that Liverpool need to be more ruthless if they are to challenge for the Premier League title.

Downing believes that Liverpool's finishing must improve if their form is to be reflected in victories.

"Our performances have been very good this season, and we have created plenty of chances, but the biggest issue so far is we haven't converted enough," the winger said.

"We haven't scored enough goals and that means we haven't killed teams off. We all know we have to finish them off when you get those sort of chances, because if you don't they invariably punish you at this level.

"Hands up, if we'd taken more of our opportunities this season then we'd be in a much better position, and we all know that."

Liverpool haven't scored more than two goals in a game since August, and Downing's debut goal for the Reds is yet to come.

"I don't know how many times I've hit the post or crossbar. It's frustrating, but I think I'm getting closer and closer each time," Downing admitted.

"I'm hoping it will happen soon. For me, that would be so good, but obviously the best thing is that the team is winning.

"We just have to keep working at it and, the way we're playing, it will surely come."

Liverpool are currently sixth in the Premier League with 26 points from 15 games.
