Cruyff linked with Liverpool role

Johan Cruyff has emerged as a surprise candidate to be named as Liverpool's new director of football.

Damien Comolli left the Merseyside club by mutual consent on Thursday after 17 months at Anfield.

Reds owners Fenway Sports Group are believed to be interested in approaching Cruyff over a senior role, according to BBC Sport.

The 64-year-old Dutch legend, who is currently the coach of the Catalan national team, has held similar positions with Ajax and Mexican side Chivas.
