Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher admits that Steven Gerrard is "desperate" to play for the Reds after a long-term spell on the sidelines.

Liverpool vice-captain Jamie Carragher has admitted that Steven Gerrard’s return to the field after being sidelined for six months with a groin injury will give “everyone a lift”.

The Anfield talisman is expected to feature in the Reds' Carling Cup third-round tie against Brighton tonight (Wednesday).

Carragher admits that the skipper’s return to action will “help” the Merseyside club after their thumping 4-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane last Saturday.

"He is the captain, the biggest name here," Carragher told the Daily Express.

"His presence will give everyone a lift. It's disappointing, of course, that he has missed the start of the new season, but what a player we now have to come back to help.

"I speak to him on a daily basis, so I know how much he has wanted to get back. That is what makes him the player he is. He is just so desperate to be part of the new scene."

Liverpool travel to Falmer Stadium this evening to face Brighton in the Carling Cup.
