Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold sets a new record for the most assists by a defender in the history of the Premier League, bringing up number 58 against Burnley.

Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has set a new record for the most assists by a defender in Premier League history.

The 25-year-old showcased his playmaking skills once again on Saturday, providing a pinpoint cross that Diogo Jota headed in for The Reds' opening goal against Burnley.

This latest assist brought his tally to a remarkable 58, making him the defender with the outright most assists since the current top flight was established in 1992-93.

However, there are concerns over the fitness of the England international as he was taken off at the break by Jurgen Klopp while the match was still level at one goal apiece.

If the 25-year-old is set for a spell on the sidelines, it will be another significant blow for Klopp, who already has Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai on the treatment table while Alisson Becker missed the match against The Clarets due to an illness.

Alexander-Arnold surpassed fellow full-back Andy Robertson (57 assists), who took the record off former Everton defender Leighton Baines back in December 2022.

Robertson was out of action for three months after damaging his shoulder while playing for Scotland against Spain in October but did make his first league start since his injury on Saturday afternoon.

While leading the list for defenders is impressive on its own, the Liverpool pair also outshine some of the Premier League's most elite playmakers and forwards, such as Paul Scholes (55 assists for Manchester United) and Mesut Ozil (54 assists for Arsenal).

Alexander-Arnold, who graduated from Liverpool's academy in 2016, has since established himself as one of the best right-backs in European football.

He has gone on to be named the club's vice-captain, and his current contract at Anfield is set to run until the summer of 2025.

Robertson, on the other hand, signed from Hull City back in 2017 for a fee in the region of £8m, and the left-back penned a new five-year deal with the club in 2021.

Liverpool currently lead the Premier League standings with 54 points after 24 matches, two points clear of Manchester City in second place, though they have played one more game than the defending champions.

The Reds will resume league action next week when they head to the Gtech Community Stadium to take on Brentford.
