Alexander Isak injury news and possible return date: Could Liverpool regret Premier League-record transfer?

How long is Isak out for, and could Reds regret record transfer?

Arne Slot has confirmed that Liverpool striker Alexander Isak was substituted due to a groin injury against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday night.

After suffering four consecutive defeats prior to their Champions League clash in Germany, the Reds got back to winning ways, emerging as 5-1 winners.

While the victory will be a welcome one to Slot, he will also be concerned about the fitness of forward Isak, who was substituted at the half-time interval for Federico Chiesa.

The Dutch boss will hope that Isak's groin injury is not too serious, but with the Merseysiders already trailing Arsenal by four points in the Premier League title race, any prolonged absence would be a serious blow.

Isak is likely to miss his side's match against Brentford on Saturday, and here, Sports Mole looks at what other games he could miss.

When will Alexander Isak return for Liverpool from his groin injury?

If the Reds have been fortunate, Isak may have only suffered a Grade One injury, which would rule him out for just one to two weeks.

The striker could theoretically be back in contention for his side's game against Aston Villa on November 1, with the forward only missing Saturday's Brentford clash and Crystal Palace's visit to Anfield on Wednesday.

A Grade Two injury would require three to six weeks on the sidelines, which would then almost certainly rule him out until December, while a Grade Three injury would see him miss out on action for upwards of two months depending on if surgery is required.

Alexander Isak's injury history: Have Liverpool made the wrong signing?

Isak was among the best players in the Premier League last season, scoring 23 goals in 34 appearances in the top flight.

The 2024-25 season was also the only one of his three campaigns for Newcastle United that he started at least 28 league matches, with the 26-year-old often struggling with injuries.

Since 2021-22, the striker has suffered one knee, two hamstring, one thigh and three groin injuries, as well as a broken toe.

Isak has proven he is able to excel in the English top flight, but it is not yet clear whether Liverpool made the right choice to sign him for £125m.

With the forward potentially facing a period on the sidelines, Slot will have to rely on other members of his squad, though he is fortunate that he can call upon Hugo Ekitike.

The Frenchman netted his sixth goal of the season against Frankfurt, and if his good form is any indicator, Liverpool will have few issues at centre-forward in the coming months.
