Daniel Sturridge: 'Liverpool players put bodies on the line'

Sturridge: 'We put our bodies on the line'

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has claimed that overcoming Villarreal in the Europa League semi-finals was a just reward for a battling display from his side.

The Englishman scored a crucial second goal to swing the tie in the Reds' favour for the first time in Thursday's second leg, as a one-goal deficit from the opening 90-minute affair at El Madrigal was wiped away in style.

Sturridge also played a big part in Liverpool's goals either side of his own strike in the 3-0 win at Anfield, proving his worth in attack after being given the nod to start by manager Jurgen Klopp.

Speaking after the match, the 26-year-old said: "There will always be ups and downs in football. It is about being prepared to put your body on the line and take chances. It is a great feeling."

Liverpool will now face Sevilla in the final later this month, with the Spanish side aiming to make it an unprecedented three trophies on the bounce in the competition.
