Arne Slot explains Alexander Isak substitution in Frankfurt win as Curtis Jones breaks Liverpool record

Slot explains Isak change in Frankfurt win as Jones breaks Liverpool record

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has provided an injury update on Alexander Isak following his enforced substitution in the Reds' 5-1 Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt, where Curtis Jones broke a club record.

The Premier League champions snapped a four-game losing run in emphatic style at the Deutsche Bank Park, thanks to five goals from five different scorers after Rasmus Kristensen's opener.

Hugo Ekitike sparked the goal rush for Liverpool, but his strike partner on the night - Isak - failed to fire in the opening 45 minutes and was taken off at the break.

The Reds did not miss the £125m man's presence, though, as Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate both struck before the break, while Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai were on target in the second 45.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Slot confirmed that Isak's substitution was due to a groin problem, although he could not say for sure how many games the Sweden international might miss.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot confirms groin injury for Alexander Isak

"He had to go off at half time because he felt his groin a little bit," Slot said. "That's a pity, but I've said it many times, it's such a difficult balance to find with a player that missed three months.

"You bring him in slowly, people sometimes maybe argue you cannot play him more often or longer. And now, we've played him for the second time in three days and unfortunately he had to go off, so let's hope for the best."

Isak was making his sixth start for Liverpool in Wednesday's humiliation of Frankfurt, having also played the full 90 in both of Sweden's October internationals against Switzerland and Kosovo.

The former Newcastle United man was one of two fresh concerns for Slot in Germany, as right-back Jeremie Frimpong was withdrawn inside the opening 20 minutes with a hamstring problem - his second of the season already.

Slot revealed to journalists that Frimpong is likely to miss a few weeks with his latest issue, ruling him out of high-profile meetings with Real Madrid and Manchester City in November before the next international break.

What Liverpool record did Curtis Jones break against Frankfurt?

Slot is not short of options to replace Frimpong in the right-back slot, and one such alternative is Curtis Jones, who has functioned as an auxiliary full-back for the Merseyside giants previously.

However, the Englishman was instead deployed in the middle of the park tonight as Conor Bradley stepped in for Frimpong, and he repaid his manager's faith in him with a record-breaking performance.

Jones completed a staggering 122 passes in the demolition of Frankfurt, the most of any Liverpool player has managed in a single Champions League game since Opta began gathering data in the 2003-04 season.

The 24-year-old will endeavour to reprise his role in the starting XI when Liverpool return to action away to Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
