Alisson Becker, Arne Slot could break Champions League records in Liverpool-PSG second leg

Liverpool manager Arne Slot and goalkeeper Alisson Becker are both capable of making Champions League history against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night.

The Reds incredibly managed to leave the Parc des Princes with a 1-0 victory to their name from last week's last-16 first leg, where Harvey Elliott came off the bench to strike an 87th-minute winner.

Elliott was one of two Liverpool heroes on the evening, as Alisson broke his personal record for the most saves in a Liverpool game, producing a terrific nine stops as PSG bombed forward throughout.

The Brazilian unsurprisingly hailed his extraordinary performance as the best of his life, and if he makes a certain number of saves on Tuesday night, he could etch his name into the European record books.

If Alisson records four or more stops and Liverpool keep a clean sheet, he will set a new record - since data became available in 2003 - for the most saves across a two-legged Champions League knockout tie without conceding.

Alisson to break Gianluigi Buffon, Hugo Lloris record?

The current highest total for that specific category is 12, first achieved by the legendary Gianluigi Buffon across the two legs of Juventus' 5-0 aggregate win over Celtic in the 2012-13 last 16.

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur shot-stopper Hugo Lloris then matched that record in the 2018-19 season with 12 stops across both legs of Spurs' last-16 tie with Borussia Dortmund, which they won 4-0 on aggregate.

However, Alisson followed up his masterful performance against PSG with a howler against Southampton at the weekend, as a rare piece of miscommunication with Virgil van Dijk gifted Will Smallbone the opening goal.

Nevertheless, Slot's side came back to win that top vs. bottom battle in the Premier League by three goals to one, as they marched to a seventh straight win at Anfield and 19th straight game without defeat at home.

The Reds were also flawless at Anfield in the league phase of the Champions League, as Real Madrid, Lille, Bologna and Bayer Leverkusen all rocked up to Merseyside and left empty-handed.

Slot on verge of making Champions League history with Liverpool

If Slot oversees another victory on Tuesday, he will become the first manager in history to win his first five Champions League home matches in charge of an English team.

History favours both Slot and Liverpool in their bid for that feat, as the Reds have advanced from each of their last 14 UCL knockout games when winning the first leg, last losing in such circumstances to Bayer Leverkusen in 2001-02.

That year, the Reds were also victorious by a 1-0 scoreline in the first leg before being slain 4-2 in the second, but PSG fought back from a 3-2 first-leg loss against Barcelona in last year's quarter-finals, winning 4-1 away from home in the return fixture.
