Brian McDermott dismisses David Bentley link

Brian McDermott pours scorn on rumours that Leeds United are looking to sign free agent David Bentley.

Leeds United manager Brian McDermott has distanced his club from speculation that has linked them with a move for David Bentley.

The former England international is currently without a team following his release by Tottenham Hotspur in June.

Recent reports had suggested that McDermott was keen to sign the 29-year-old on a deal until the end of the campaign, but the Leeds boss has insisted that he already has enough cover in Bentley's position.

"There is no point me bringing in a player for the sake of it. I won't just bring players in because we can. That might have happened in the past at other clubs or here, but I'm not going to do that," he told reporters.

"David Bentley has been available for a little while and has been a good player. But we've got Ross McCormack and El Hadji Diouf, so you're talking about similar sort of players. Bentley is a good player, but when you've got Ross and Dioufy, you've got players that are already in that mould. The last thing that you want to do is stockpile players in a position, it's just not right."

Bentley's services have also been linked with Bulgarian side Levski Sofia of late.
