Rotherham United edge out Leeds United in fiery Yorkshire derby

Two players see red as Rotherham United win 1-0 at Leeds United.

Leeds United have crashed to a 1-0 home defeat to Rotherham United in a fiery Yorkshire derby where both sides finished the game with 10 men.

The Whites had the ball in the net in the 17th minute when Stuart Dallas pounced on the rebound from Chris Wood's initial strike, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Rotherham came close just before the half-hour mark as Richard Smallwood crashed a free kick against the post, although the set piece had to be retaken due to an encroachment.

Leeds started the second period on the front foot and came within an inch of scoring moments after the restart, Mirco Antenucci shooting narrowly wide from 20 yards.

However, they were pegged back when Rotherham registered their first effort on target, Joe Newell heading home Smallwood's cross to give the Millers the lead.

The hosts came close to an immediate equaliser when Luke Murphy's strike deflected off Harry Toffolo and lobbed Rotherham goalkeeper Lee Camp, only to end up on the wrong side of the post.

Tensions boiled over in the 73rd minute when Leon Best was sent off for elbowing Gaetano Berardi in the face, with the Italian also receiving his marching orders for lashing out in retaliation.

With both sides down to 10 men, Leeds created a handful of late chances, but were unable to force an equaliser, despite having six minutes of stoppage time to do so.
