Half-Time Report: Sheffield Wednesday punish Sam Byram's mistake to lead Leeds United

Chris Maguire punishes Sam Byram's mistake from the penalty spot to give Sheffield Wednesday a 1-0 half-time lead over Leeds United at Hillsborough.

Chris Maguire punished Sam Byram's mistake from the penalty spot to give Sheffield Wednesday a 1-0 half-time lead over Leeds United at Hillsborough this afternoon.

Each side came close in the opening quarter of an hour as Caolan Lavery shot wide after cutting inside and Alex Mowatt narrowly missed the target with a free kick.

Wednesday survived a scare when Keiren Westwood suffered a nasty fall and had to undergo treatment. The goalkeeper went unworked for the remainder of the half, but his opposite number was soon picking the ball out of his net, as Maguire notched his eighth of the season from the spot when Byram felled Lloyd Isgrove inside the box on 35 minutes.

The striker then crossed for Tom Lees to direct a header at goal which was tipped over the crossbar as Leeds ensured that no more damage was done before the break.

The Whites are currently seven points and four places below their Yorkshire rivals in the Championship mid-table.
