Peter Zeidler's Lausanne qualified for the UEFA Conference League's second qualifying round by finishing fifth in 2024-25's top flight, and victory in this clash would give them a boost on the path to making the European places once again.

Les bleu et blanc have started the campaign with three points from a possible six, beating Winterthur 3-2 on matchday one but losing 2-1 on the road against Thun last Sunday.

That defeat left Zeidler's side seventh in the table, one point shy of sixth-placed Young Boys in the top half and three behind league leaders Sion.

On Thursday, Lausanne took one step closer to reaching the league phase of the Conference League by winning 3-1 in the first leg of their third qualifying round tie against FC Astana, and they will draw confidence from their triumph earlier this week.

Additionally, Les bleu et blanc have performed excellently on their own turf this summer, and fans may even be expecting another victory on Sunday after seeing their team win five of their last six home games.

Meanwhile, FC Zurich ended last season on 53 points, the same as this weekend's opponents, but they were unable to compete for a place in Europe due to being stuck in the bottom six when the league split.

After missing out on continental competition, Ricardo Moniz was replaced as manager by Mitchell van der Gaag, who earned five straight wins to start his tenure.

However, FCZ are without a single victory so far in the 2025-26 Swiss Super League having lost their opening day clash 3-2 against top-of-the-table Sion and drawn 1-1 with Luzern most recently.

That stalemate has Van der Gaag's men ninth in the division with just one point to their name, two behind their hosts and a troubling five short of the top four at such an early stage.

To make matters worse, the visitors have struggled on the road in 2025, and after losing four and drawing two of their last six competitive away games, they are without a meaningful travelling triumph since March.

A first competitive win under their new boss could lift FC Zurich into the top half in a best-case scenario, though they could fall down to the bottom of the pile depending on results elsewhere.

Team News

Lausanne will be without midfielder Alvyn Sanches once again as he works his way back from a cruciate ligament injury, and Olivier Custodio, Jamie Roche and Gaoussou Diakite should start in the centre of the park this weekend.  

In the short-term, Manchester United-owned forward Enzo Kana-Biyik is also out of action, so expect to see Kaly Sene and Alban Ajdini to start up top, while right-back Hamza Abdallah is dealing with a knock.  

As for FC Zurich, strikers Juan Jose Perea and Calixte Ligue are both unavailable due to injury, and Damienus Reverson should start in their absence.

Likewise, left-back Milan Rodic and 18-year-old defender David Vujevic have struggled for fitness in recent weeks, and the manager is likely to select a back four consisting of Lindrit Kamberi, Mariano Gomez, Ilan Sauter and Neil Volken.
