Winning debut for Steven Gerrard as Los Angeles Galaxy score late

LA Galaxy score late to beat Club America

Steven Gerrard played 45 minutes on his debut for Los Angeles Galaxy as they beat Mexican side Club America 2-1.

It took Club America only seven minutes to find the breakthrough as Michael Arroyo slid a pass through for Darwin Quintero to chase, and he calmly slotted the ball through the legs of the keeper.

Club America almost doubled their lead shortly after as Arroyo picked out Erik Pimentel in the box, but he headed the ball marginally wide.

The Galaxy came close to equalising minutes later when Keane set up Sebastian Lletget, but he fired wide from a few yards out.

Gerrard then almost capped his debut with a goal when he waltzed through the Club America defence, but his shot was blocked by the keeper's feet.

Minutes before half time, Robbie Keane equalised as he controlled a long pass, cut inside a defender and goalkeeper and stroked the ball into the back of the net.

Galaxy made nine changes at half time, which included Gerrard's exit, and they could have taken the lead on the hour mark.

Kenny Walker found Alan Gordon but he was denied twice in quick succession by Erik Pimentel. A quarter-of-an-hour later, Arroyo's 30-yard free kick was saved by Andrew Wolverton.

However, with 11 minutes remaining, Galaxy took the lead when Raul Mendiola's cross met the head of Gordon, who looped the ball into the net.
