Los Angeles Galaxy hire Sigi Schmid as new head coach

LA Galaxy appoint former Seattle Sounders boss Sigi Schmid as their new head coach.

Major League Soccer outfit Los Angeles Galaxy have hired Sigi Schmid as their new head coach.

The former Seattle Sounders boss joins the club following the dismissal of Curt Onalfo, who was sacked after Galaxy made a poor start to their Western Conference campaign.

Schmid, who had an earlier spell at Galaxy between 1999 and 2004, is the most successful coach in MLS history with 254 career wins, two MLS Cup triumphs and two MLS Coach of the Year accolades.

"In the city of Los Angeles and throughout North America, the LA Galaxy are the iconic standard of success and innovation within soccer," said Schmid in a statement.

"I am very proud to return to the Galaxy and I know the expectations here are to win championships each year, beginning with a sixth MLS Cup. I am thankful to AEG president and CEO Dan Beckerman, Galaxy president Chris Klein and Galaxy general manager Pete Vagenas for the opportunity to lead this team.

"I will work tirelessly to again win trophies for the club, its players, our fans and the city of Los Angeles."

Schmid will take charge of Galaxy for the first time during his second stint when they take on his former club Seattle Sounders this weekend.
