David Beckham gets backing of MLS for new franchise

David Beckham's plans to site his new MLS franchise in the Overtown area of Miami are approved by MLS.

David Beckham has received the public backing of MLS commissioner Don Garber for his plans to set up a new franchise in Miami.

The former England captain and LA Galaxy man has, along with his team, been trying to find a home for the new club in the Florida city for over a year, and he has secured land in the city's Overtown neighbourhood.

Beckham needed the approval of the league in order to progress with the development, and on the eve of the MLS Cup final he received the public support of Garber following a meeting of the board of governors.

"We are very supportive of Miami Beckham United's plans to locate their stadium in the City of Miami's Overtown neighbourhood," Garber said in a statement.

"Their vision for a world-class venue within the urban core that is accessible by mass transportation is impressive, and we believe that it will be an important part of the continued revitalisation of the area.

"We look forward to working with David and his partners to finalise plans to bring Major League Soccer to Miami."

Beckham won three conference titles and two MLS Cups in five years at LA Galaxy.
