Steve Bruce: 'Hull City were denied two stonewall penalties'

Hull City manager Steve Bruce believes that his side should have had "two stonewall penalties" during Tuesday night's 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

Hull City manager Steve Bruce believes that his side should have had "two stonewall penalties" during Tuesday night's 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

The Tigers twice appealed for a spot kick during the opening 15 minutes. Shane Long was pushed off the ball by Daniel Gabbidon moments after Nikica Jelavic had gone down under a strong Adrian Mariappa challenge.

To compound Hull's frustration, Palace took the lead against the run of play through Jason Puncheon on 16 minutes.

Things got even worse in second-half stoppage time when goalkeeper Allan McGregor was shown a straight red card by referee Roger East for lashing out at Stuart O'Keefe.

"We're hugely disappointed," Bruce told BBC Sport. "I got fined two weeks ago and I don't want to [be fined] again but we had two stonewall penalties in the first half and to send the goalkeeper off summed up the night. It was innocuous.

"We played well, Palace didn't create a chance but we go home with nothing.

"People will work it out, Jelavic is pulled down for one penalty and Long is clattered for the second. If they aren't penalties I don't know what are. These are big games and big decisions."

Bruce added: "Referees are paid handsomely to make big calls and he hasn't done that today. To send the goalkeeper off, we are scratching our heads. It's a horrible challenge on him [by O'Keefe], yes he's reacted but if anything it's a yellow. He hasn't turned around and whacked him.

"I go away and pay fines and I'll probably get another one but I only speak the truth. It's time for the referee to come out and face the cameras. When penalties are as blatant as that we have to be aggrieved."

Palace are now level on points with Hull. The two teams sit 14th and 13th respectively in the Premier League table.
