Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Alex Smithies describes himself as "over the moon" after scoring the decisive penalty that earned his side promotion to the Championship.

Huddersfield Town penalty hero Alex Smithies has described himself as "over the moon" following his side's promotion to the Championship.

After keeping a clean sheet for 120 minutes of the League One play-off final against Sheffield United, the 22-year-old goalkeeper saved two spot kicks in the shootout before scoring the winning penalty himself.

He told BBC Radio 5 live: "I'm over the moon. I can't believe it. The lads were terrific and I can't believe how it turned out."

Smithies has made 15 appearances this season, keeping five clean sheets.
