Half-Time Report: James Tavernier, Martyn Waghorn put Rangers ahead

Tavernier, Waghorn put Rangers ahead

Rangers have recovered from going a goal down early on to lead Hibernian in their Scottish Challenge Cup first-round tie at Easter Road thanks to goals from James Tavernier and Martyn Waghorn.

The hosts started brightly and went close inside the opening 10 minutes when Paul Hanlon picked out an unmarked Dominique Malonga on the penalty spot, but the Congolese striker blazed his effort way over the top of goal.

Jason Cummings then drilled a low effort narrowly wide, before Sam Stanton put his side ahead on 14 minutes.

The young midfielder struck from 20 yards as his low effort eluded the dive of Rangers' debutant goalkeeper Wes Foderingham.

Rangers could have been level when Lee Wallace cut a ball back for Martyn Waghorn, but the former Wigan Athletic man couldn't make contact and the loose ball was poked wide by Jason Holt.

Malonga was forced off with an apparent injury for Hibs, and replaced by Lewis Allan, before Tavernier put his side level with a curling free kick from the edge of the area.

Just 60 seconds before the break Rangers then moved ahead as Waghorn swept home Holt's cross from close range.
