Michael Mancienne: 'Playing abroad shouldn't prevent England call'

Mancienne: 'Playing abroad can't stop England call'

Hamburger SV defender Michael Mancienne believes that playing abroad should not be counted against a player for England selection.

The 25-year-old moved to the Bundesliga side in 2011 and has put in a series of impressive performances, and now wants to be considered by Roy Hodgson.

Mancienne told the Daily Star: "You have to be playing Europa League or Champions League to really get recognition.

"That's a key thing and what Hamburg is aiming for this year. But if you are playing well they should still be watching you. I don't think you should drop off the radar if you play abroad."

Mancienne has yet to appear for the England senior side but made 30 appearances for the Under-21 team.
