Lenell John-Lewis strike enough for Grimsby Town

A second-half goal from Lenell John-Lewis earns Grimsby Town a 1-0 victory away at Braintree Town in the Conference Premier.

Grismby Town have moved into seventh place in the Conference Premier after a 1-0 victory away at Braintree Town.

Nathan Arnold, who is on loan from Cambridge United, had the first opportunity of the contest for Grimsby, but his free kick narrowly cleared the crossbar.

Braintree, who are the league's out-of-form team after going seven games without a win, weren't having much effect in the final third and that allowed Grimsby to control large portions of the first half.

Lenell John-Lewis squandered an opportunity after being found by Harry Pell, but like their hosts, they weren't able to create too many chances on goal.

Matthew Paine flicked a header wide for the hosts soon after the restart but soon after the hour mark, they found themselves behind against the Mariners.

Craig Clay's strike was well saved by Braintree stopper Nick Hamann, but John-Lewis was on hand to slide in the rebound for his 11th goal in all competitions.

Braintree came close to an equaliser with 17 minutes remaining when Omar Sowunmi's header from a free kick flashed wide of the post.

Pell tried his luck from distance late on but despite his strike being well claimed by the goalkeeper, Grimsby were content to hang on for the three points.
