Report: Everton to extend McCarthy contract

Everton are reportedly planning to reward midfielder James McCarthy with a new contract at Goodison Park.

The 23-year-old has established himself as a prominent figure in Roberto Martinez's side since securing a £13m move from Wigan Athletic last summer.

The Toffees are aware of McCarthy's importance and will offer the Republic of Ireland international an improved deal, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Should an extension materialise, McCarthy would become the fifth player to commit himself to the club in recent months.

Martinez, who himself penned a new long-term deal after leading the club to a fifth-place finish last season, has also tied Tim Howard, Seamus Coleman, Ross Barkley and John Stones down to new contracts.
