Everton working on Rohl loan deal with obligation to buy 'revealed'

Everton are reportedly working on a deal to sign Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl

The 23-year-old has been a long-term target for Everton, who are looking to recruit a midfielder before the transfer deadline.

As per Sky Sports News, Rohl flew into Liverpool airport this morning to hold talks with Everton over a move.

The Toffees are hoping to finalise a loan move for Rohl before the summer transfer window closes for business at 7pm.

According to journalist Lyall Thomas, Everton could pay an initial £1.7m to sign the Freiburg man until the end of the season.

The proposed deal is believed to include an obligation for the Toffees to convert Rohl's move into a permanent transfer next summer.

An obligation to buy is reportedly set at £19m for a player who only signed a new contract with Freiburg in September 2024.

Rohl could become Everton's ninth addition of the summer transfer window following Tyler Dibling, Jack Grealish, Thierno Barry, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Carlos Alcaraz, Adam Aznou, Mark Travers and Tom King

Who is Merlin Rohl?

Rohl has made 60 competitive appearances since he joined Freiburg from FC Ingolstadt in the summer of 2022, chipping in with three goals and six assists.

The midfielder has featured in Freiburg's first three competitive matches of the new season, although he is yet to start for Julian Schuster's side this season.

Rohl has represented Germany at Under-18, Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 levels, including four appearances at the Under-21 European Championships in June.

The 23-year-old can operate as a central midfielder or play further forward in the number 10 position.
