The 2025 summer transfer window in England and other high-profile European nations may have closed a week ago, but the dealings are not done yet, either for employed or indeed unemployed players.
Clubs in the Turkish Super Lig and Saudi Pro League can still sign players for a little while longer, allowing Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and Bundesliga teams a last-chance saloon to offload any deadwood in what remains of summer.
On the other hand, a handful of experienced professionals are still searching for their next destinations, having either walked away from their last club at the end of the season or had their contract terminated - mutually or not.
Here, Sports Mole takes a look at five free agents still on the market and where they could potentially end up.
Christian Eriksen

Far from ready to retire at 33 years of age, Denmark veteran Christian Eriksen has entered the unfamiliar world of free agency following the expiration of his contract with Manchester United, where he was a loyal and effective servant.
The Scandinavian may not have hit the levels of creative genius he did at Tottenham Hotspur, but eight goals and 19 assists from 107 appearances is nothing to be scoffed at, and he stayed injury-free from 2024 onwards.
Eriksen is still an important component of the Denmark squad as the 2026 World Cup comes into view, although he did not make the selection for the September international break due to his unattached status, and a new destination must be sought sooner rather than later if he is to have any hope of going to the North America.
Eriksen has been training with Swedish outfit Malmo after supposedly rejecting the chance to join Wrexham, but Football Insider claims that Premier League and Championship clubs are still running the rule over him; perhaps a newly-promoted team could come calling?
Possible destinations: Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sunderland, Ajax, MLS
Sergio Reguilon
Flash back to the COVID-ravaged era of 2020, where Sergio Reguilon was ostensibly on his way to left-back stardom, having played a critical role in Sevilla's 2019-20 Europa League success at the age of 23.
However, the Spaniard never looked at home in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, and while he did shine briefly for Brentford in the 2023-24 season after a failed spell at Manchester United, it was not enough for Ange Postecoglou or indeed Thomas Frank to consider a North London revival.
Health issues also plagued Reguilon when he represented Atletico Madrid, although it has been claimed by SportsCasting that the Rojiblancos would welcome him back, in spite of concerns surrounding his fitness.
Premier League ever-presents Everton could also do worse than explore a move for the Spaniard, though, as Vitaliy Mykolenlo is injured and new signing Adam Aznou is just 19 years of age.
Possible destinations: Everton, Atletico Madrid, Saudi Pro League
Lorenzo Insigne

Lionel Messi will of course be the first name that springs to mind when discussing diminutive attacking talents, but the 5ft 4in Lorenzo Insigne has seldom been restricted by his height, both domestically and internationally.
A cornerstone of Italy's Euro 2020-winning squad, the 34-year-old is now unattached after ending his stint with MLS outfit Torino, where he had a direct hand in 35 goals in 76 appearances; 19 of his own and 16 assists.
Seemingly not ready to hang up his boots just yet, the Napoli legend could very well seek out one last massive payday in MLS, Saudi Arabia or Qatar, especially as he has already retired from international duty and does not have the 2026 World Cup on his mind.
However, a return to Serie A is supposedly on Insigne's mind; he was said to have been in talks with Parma, but Lazio are his number one pick, even though Maurizio Sarri's side must serve a transfer ban until January.
Possible destinations: Lazio, Parma
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Still Arsenal's most expensive sale of all time, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been waking up unemployed for almost a fortnight following his contract termination with Turkish outfit Besiktas towards the end of August.
The 32-year-old joined the Super Lig side in 2023 with his career at a crossroads having just ended a trophy-laden six-year spell at Liverpool, but his perpetual injury concerns continued to plague him in Turkey, where he suffered from thigh and knee issues.
The Premier League and Champions League winner could now seek home comforts in either the Premier League or the Championship, where a stream of clubs are supposedly lining up to take a look at Arsenal and Southampton's former starboy.
Everton and Leeds United are believed to be among them, in addition to Birmingham City and Rangers, and it would not be a shock to see Wrexham throw their hat into the ring too.
Possible destinations: Leeds, Rangers, Birmingham, Wrexham, Everton
Dele Alli
Sticking with the theme of English playmakers searching for a new stomping ground, Dele Alli's career has been plunged into uncertainty once again following his release from Serie A upstarts Como.
Cesc Fabregas extended an olive branch to the 29-year-old, but he made just one disastrous appearance for Como, coming off the bench against AC Milan and receiving a straight red card just nine minutes after his introduction.
Owing to his well-documented on-field and off-field struggles, as well as his lack of football throughout the past couple of years, Alli can surely forget about finding another Premier League club to take him on as a free agent.
However, Wrexham's name has inevitably appeared in the conversation once again, as the Daily Mail claims that the Hollywood-backed team are one of three Championship clubs weighing up a move for the former England international.
Possible destinations: Wrexham, Birmingham, West Bromwich Albion
