Everton interim manager David Unsworth is happy with his players for putting in a "terrific" performance in Wednesday night's 2-1 defeat at Chelsea in the EFL Cup.

Everton interim manager David Unsworth has praised his players for putting in a "terrific" performance in Wednesday night's 2-1 defeat at Chelsea in the EFL Cup.

The Toffees more than held their own against the Blues at Stamford Bridge, but succumbed to goals from Antonio Rudiger and Willian.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin's injury-time strike set up a nervy finish for Antonio Conte's charges but it proved too little too late for Everton, who go out at the last-16 stage.

"Nobody likes losing games, I'm a bad loser but I have to say I'm proud of the performance, they were terrific," Unsworth told BBC Sport after the game. "We are disappointed to lose, we think we had chances to get something from the game.

"We knew James McCarthy could only play for 60 minutes so we were always going to change things then. We limited Chelsea and then opened it up. We were camped in the Chelsea half, there is loads to work on."

Up next for Everton is Sunday's Premier League trip to Leicester City.
