Everton cruise past Lille at Goodison Park

Everton thrash Lille 3-0 at Goodison Park to edge nearer toward securing their place in the last-32 stage of the Europa League.

Everton thrashed Lille 3-0 at Goodison Park tonight to stay top of Group H in the Europa League.

First-half goals from Leon Osman and Phil Jagielka gave the Ligue 1 outfit a mountain to climb in the second half, before Steven Naismith effectively killed off the clash with a third later on.

Everton raced out of the traps and could have moved ahead as early as the first minute when Romelu Lukaku forced a finger-tip save from Vincent Enyeama.

Roberto Martinez's side continued their barnstorming start to the clash and had another chance on 15 minutes when Naismith headed an Aiden McGeady free kick over the bar.

It proved a sign of things to come as Osman vindicated the club's decision to award him a new contract by opening the scoring with a fine volley on 27 minutes.

The 33-year-old, who penned a one-year extension earlier today, volleyed into the corner of the goal after McGeady's cross evaded everybody inside the box.

It should have been two just minutes later as McGeady menaced again to set up Lukaku, who guided his free header well wide of the far post, before Jagielka spared his blushes shortly before the break.

Little changed from Lille in the second half and Everton effectively put the game beyond doubt on the hour mark, collecting Leighton Baines's cut-back before thrashing into the roof of the net to cap a routine win.
