Jermain Defoe: 'I proved Hodgson wrong'

Toronto striker Jermain Defoe says that he is still disappointed to miss out on the World Cup after scoring in the club's 2-0 win against New York Red Bulls.

Toronto striker Jermain Defoe has said that he has proved England manager Roy Hodgson wrong after scoring in his side's 2-0 win against New York Red Bulls on Saturday.

Defoe, who was left out of Hodgson's 23-man squad for the World Cup in Brazil, has scored five goals in seven appearances since joining the MLS club from Tottenham Hotspur in January.

"I don't think I'll ever be at peace (with the decision)," Defoe told reporters.

"When you've been involved in every squad and the World Cup comes around and you're not in the 23, it's hard to understand.

"It's only normal when you get a disappointment to try to prove people wrong, and just to remind people, at the end of the day, this is what I'm doing. I think I did that today."

Defoe has scored 19 goals in 55 matches for England.
